There have been plenty of debates. Why convert an air-cooled VW into a water-cooled?
Sacrilege you say? For many VW enthusiasts maybe. But for a petrol head speed junkie maybe is a way to heaven.
Subaru engines are the most common conversion. They share the same layout (4cyl boxer) and fits almost like a glove into your rusty beetle. By doing that, you get to earn the following advantages.
- Cheap to buy Subaru engine (in almost any scrap yard)
- Reliability (these engines are -stock- factory tuned and are 30+ years ahead in development than the Air-cooled VW engine)
- Better fuel efficiency
- 16 valves and injection offering top performance
- Plenty of choices. Starting from the n/a 1600cc (EJ16, 95HP) to Turbo 2500cc (EJ25, 280HP)
